Godstime Chibuzor Dan-Nwaogu
I have more than 10 years of experience teaching science, particularly chemistry, at the secondary school level. enabled me to develop strong skills in creating lesson plans, classroom management, science practical demonstrations, assessment, learner support, and effective communication. With passion, I taught scientific concepts in ways that connect theory to practical life applications, helping learners understand both what occurred in the scientific process and why it happens and how it relates to the world around them. My approach to teaching science and chemistry is learner-centered, practical, inclusive, and inquiry-based. I believe my students enjoy the fun of learning and learn more effectively when they are actively engaged in learning activities rather than simply absorbing information from the teacher. Therefore, I adopt questioning, discussion, demonstrations, experiments, problem-solving activities, and real-life examples to motivate learners to explore scientific ideas and develop critical-thinking skills. In chemistry, for example, I use object lessons and aim to link abstract concepts such as chemical reactions, atomic structure, inorganic and organic chemistry to observable phenomena and practical applications. I also acknowledge that my students have different abilities, backgrounds, learning needs, and confidence levels. I, therefore, understand the need to comply with the equality, diversity, and inclusion policies and legislative frameworks that aim to create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment in which each of my learners feels respected and motivated to participate. I use differentiated explanations, appropriate questioning, additional support and varied learning activities to help learners overcome difficulties and make progress. I also initiate and stimulate collaboration among students because working together can build and enhance communication, confidence and problem-solving skills. Another vital teaching approach I use is assessment. I use questioning, classwork, practical or fieldwork activities, homework, quizzes, and formal assessments to monitor my students' understanding and identify areas requiring further support. I use constructive feedback without focusing on mistakes but directing efforts to ensure my learners understand how they can improve. I also reflect on learners' performance and my teaching strategies so that I can adapt future lessons to meet their needs more effectively. Overall, my teaching philosophy is centered on helping learners develop knowledge, curiosity, confidence, and a positive attitude towards science, especially chemistry. As a science and chemistry teacher, I see my role not only as delivering subject content but also as enabling my students to acquire transferable skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and independent learning. I aim to inspire learners to appreciate the importance of science and understand its relevance in health, technology, the environment and society.
