About Folaranmi
I am a Mathematics and Physics tutor with teaching experience spanning vacation-school instruction, volunteer education, and formal academic instruction. My approach is built around a simple principle: students should understand how and why something works, not merely memorise steps to reproduce in an examination. My teaching journey began in 2018 as a Mathematics and Physics Instructor at Deeper Life Vacation School, where I helped students break down quantitative concepts and work through challenging problems. In 2023, I volunteered as an educator at a startup school, supporting foundational learning and developing learning modules that encouraged confidence, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity. More recently, from 2025 to 2026, I worked as an Academic Instructor at Messiah Covenant College, delivering academic instruction, developing assessments to identify learning gaps, and using targeted teaching strategies to strengthen subject understanding. My teaching philosophy combines the clarity of Richard Feynman's approach to explaining complex ideas in simple terms with Dr Justin Sung's emphasis on effective learning strategies, deeper understanding, and independent thinking. I break difficult topics into manageable steps, connect new ideas to concepts students already understand, and use worked examples to make abstract principles easier to grasp. I then move beyond explanation by asking students to explain their reasoning, apply concepts to unfamiliar questions, and solve progressively more demanding problems. I believe that struggling with a difficult topic does not mean a student is incapable of learning it. Often, it means there is a gap in their understanding or that they need a different way of approaching the problem. Rather than immediately supplying answers, I guide students through their reasoning, use questions and practice exercises to uncover misconceptions, and help them develop the confidence to work through challenges independently. My goal is to help secondary school students build strong foundations in Mathematics and Physics, improve their approach to academic assessments, and develop the analytical thinking needed to tackle unfamiliar questions. I want every student I teach to become less dependent on memorisation and more capable of understanding, applying, and explaining what they have learned. For me, effective tutoring is not simply about making a difficult lesson seem easy. It is about helping students develop the understanding, problem-solving skills, and learning strategies to handle difficult lessons for themselves.
